He was on his way home\u00a0when his scanner told of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. When he heard the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-931 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/runforrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/wtc4n-19-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"499\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Stephen\u00a0drove his truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was already closed. He strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic, and ran from the Tunnel to the Towers where he gave up his life while saving others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Every year since a commemorative run has been held in his honor retracing his steps from the tunnel to where the towers once stood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I am honored to be participating in this event again.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0The finished observation deck is beautiful and should be on the top of everyone&#8217;s to-do-list when in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Since the observation deck is now open to the public this year&#8217;s race had to begin at 5 AM. \u00a0We all arrived at 4 AM in order to go through security and prepare ourselves for the grueling climb up.
