THE POISON OF GOSSIP

THE POISON OF GOSSIP

Proverbs 18:8

The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.

The bible the book of Proverbs specifically has many verses referring to the danger, the poison that is often spread by the tongue.  As the primary organ of taste, the tongue has been used many times as a venom that often separates intimate friends. Proverbs 17:9 teaches us that “he who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends (KJ).”

Have you heard of the story of the woman who spread so much gossip and rumors about another person, only to later find out that the thing she was saying was untrue? Yes this woman when she realized that she had wrong another, she was sorry and discussed this with her pastor. The pastor’s counsel was for the woman to take a feathered pillow, make a hole in the pillow and go around the town scattering the feathers everywhere. In the morning the pastor asked the same woman to go back though the town and pick up all the feathers she had sprinkled.  The woman realized only then the damage caused by her words, her tongue, cannot so easily be retracted.  “Without wood a fire goes out, without a gossip a quarrel dies down Prov. 26:20 (NIV).”

Quote

“You shall not spread a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness Exodus 23:1 (KJ).”
